The Effectiveness of an Existential Therapy-based Psychological Counselling Program in Improving the Degree of Social Intelligence and Perceived Self-Efficacy among Mothers of Children with Mild Mental Disabilities

Abstract
The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a psychological counseling program based on existential therapy in enhancing social intelligence and perceived self-efficacy among a sample of mothers of children with mild mental disabilities. To achieve the study's objectives, the researcher developed a counseling program grounded in existential therapy and prepared scales for measuring social intelligence and perceived self-efficacy, which demonstrated methodological validity and reliability. The study sample included 20 mothers of children with mild mental disabilities, residing with their children on scholarships for treatment in Jordan. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups: an experimental group consisting of 10 individuals who received the counseling program, which comprised 24 sessions, and a control group of 10 mothers who did not receive the program. The performance of participants in both the experimental and control groups was measured using the social intelligence and perceived self-efficacy scales before and after the intervention, with a follow-up measurement for the experimental group conducted four weeks after the program's conclusion. The researcher employed a quasi-experimental design with pre- and post-measurements, comparing the control and experimental groups. The study results indicated a statistically significant difference at the 0.01 significance level between the average ranks of scores of the experimental and control group members after the program's implementation, in favor of the experimental group, on both the social intelligence scale and the perceived self-efficacy measure. Additionally, there was a statistically significant difference at the 0.01 significance level between the average ranks of scores for the experimental group on the social intelligence scale and the perceived self-efficacy measure in the post-intervention and follow-up measurements, favoring the follow-up measurement.
