Abstract

This study aimed to explore the opportunities and challenges associated with the use of professional development platforms in enhancing employee skills, in light of the rapid digital transformations in modern work environments. A mixed-methods approach was adopted using an exploratory sequential design. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eight employees to capture their perceptions of the platforms' effectiveness, and the results from the qualitative analysis were used to construct a quantitative tool—a questionnaire administered to a sample of 130 employees. The findings revealed that professional development platforms offer significant opportunities, including the enhancement of professional and personal skills, support for self-directed learning and career progression, access to flexible training content, and accredited certifications that contribute to improved job performance. However, several challenges were also identified, such as limited time, work pressure, poor content quality, technical and language barriers, and a lack of institutional support and motivation. The study concluded that maximizing the effectiveness of these platforms requires integration with institutional policies, alignment of content with employee needs, improvement of technical infrastructure, and the provision of appropriate incentives. The study concluded with a set of practical recommendations and suggestions for future research aimed at deepening understanding of the role of professional development platforms in supporting human capital and achieving institutional development goals.
