Abstract

Creative leadership is one of the most important issues that affect the effectiveness of Saudi universities' performance and their ability to face challenges. Research on creative leadership is crucial in order to frame the most important aspects of this type of leadership and employ it to support research productivity indicators. Research productivity indicators play a major role in improving the reputation of universities and framing their efforts in the service of science and knowledge. Despite the number of quantitative studies that aimed to study creative leadership, there is a noticeable scarcity of qualitative studies that provide an accurate description of the variables of creative leadership from the point of view of the most Highly Impact researchers. Therefore, the current study aims to conduct a qualitative analysis from the perspective of some of the most influential researchers at universities in the Makkah region (King Abdulaziz University, Umm Al-Qura University, and Jeddah University) to understand how creative leadership can contribute to improving research productivity. The study adopted an interpretive approach using a phenomenological approach to reach a better and deeper understanding regarding the roles of creative leadership in improving research productivity. A semi-structured interview was used with nine (9) highly Impact researchers where qualitative discussions were conducted on the roles of creative leadership in improving research productivity. The results of the current study came up with seven specific roles, namely: Finding sources of funding for research projects, developing programmes that support scientific research, flexibility of research contracts, technical structure for managing the scientific research system, research data analytics, research partnerships, and research incentives. The study recommended training leaders in the field of scientific research on creative leadership skills, and preparing guidelines for creative leadership skills, as well as research productivity indicators.
