Green Education in Arab Learning Cities
(A Strategic Framework for Promoting Sustainability in Light of Global Best Practices)
Abstract
This research explores the topic of green education as a vital tool for promoting environmental and social sustainability in the Arab world. The study reviews global and Arab practices in green education, focusing on how environmental principles such as renewable energy, sustainability, and green technologies are integrated into curricula. The research highlights successful global experiences in green education, with countries like the United States, Sweden, and Japan adopting innovative techniques. In the United States, sustainability concepts are incorporated into curricula using advanced technologies like virtual reality to enhance student interaction and understanding of environmental issues. Sweden is a leading example in embedding environmental education at all educational levels, focusing on raising awareness about sustainable practices such as renewable energy and recycling. In Japan, green education is a core component of the national school curriculum, with environmental conservation strategies integrated into students' daily activities and the broader community. In the Arab world, several countries, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, and Oman, have adopted green education as a tool for advancing environmental sustainability. In the UAE, green schools powered by renewable energy sources like solar power have been established, aiming to raise student awareness of sustainability through educational curricula and joint environmental projects with local communities. Saudi Arabia focuses on integrating green education into academic curricula and developing eco-friendly schools. Egypt emphasizes partnerships with environmental institutions to enhance curricula that include sustainability concepts. In Oman, educational projects promoting environmental awareness are implemented through school gardening activities and awareness campaigns. Additionally, the study proposes a model for applying green education in Arab learning cities, focusing on curriculum development, teacher training, and strengthening partnerships between educational institutions and local communities to ensure successful implementation.
