Abstract

Modern Arab criticism is living a new phase, and it deals with the literary phenomenon from a new perspective and raises new questions. The Arab novel has adopted techniques from Western novels, but it also uses cultural and popular heritage. The new Arab novel expresses human and global social conflicts and implicitly represents the Arab human liberation movement from traditions and the absence of understanding the vision of the world. The text remains, in essence, an important question in contemporary criticism, as some approaches prefer external interpretation and others find a relational approach to explore the relationships between the narrative text and social structures. The term "space" has been a subject of discussion in Arab criticism, with few studies focusing on the concept of place associated with the natural structure. Critics such as Siza (Qasim) and Yassin Al-Nasser have contributed to discussing the concept of space in contemporary Iraqi criticism. However, the concept of space must remain linked to reading and not to theory, because it is subject to a general theory that extrapolates its cognitive reality. Previous studies have focused on the limitations of space without studying the space within the text, and have failed to answer the question of how space within the narrative discourse becomes a space for absorbing the events of the novel.
